DotNetNuke (DNN) 9.13.01 Overview and Quick Look

I've been playing around with DotNetNuke lately. In a professional setting I've used paid modules and themes, they're reasonably priced for the professional world, but for a hobbyist they can be pricey. DotNetNuke modules seem to be generally licensed in a few ways, the most common is by portal.

In DotNetNuke a portal is a seperate site, they share some backend items, and can even share users, but a single DNN instance can have a large number of portals, each with their own domain, modules, content, and users. This is a great benefit if you're looking at hosting a bunch of different websites with a common administrative backend.

The major issue with DNN, especially for smaller setups is the cost. It requires Microsoft SQL, which in a flavors costs a good amount compared to for instance Wordpress. You can setup a Wordpress install for a few bucks a month with a ton of free themes and modules, A single DNN install between setup licensing, themes, and modules could run $3,000-$5,000 easily.

There are some really solid benefits, the best of which is security and some really good customization opportunities.

Check out the video below for a simple overview, we'll install a theme and play around with the interface.

Stay tuned for more posts where we dive deeper into DNN.
